If there is a steep roof or nearby obstruction the chimney will need more length above the roof to meet code. The chimney is a minimum for 3 above the uphill side of the roof and 2 higher than anything within 10 feet. You can leave solid pack chimneys exposed and braced. Specifications aren t there to merely cause you problems.

The height of the chimney above the roof surface measured at the up slope side of the chimney from the roof surface to the chimney top should be at least three feet the green line in our photo. This height requirement is extremely important for the safety of the chimney system. At this point we cover everything in the rule. To prevent this from occurring a chimney should extend at least 3 feet past a flat roof and be at least 2 feet above any roof peak within a 10 foot radius.

It means any pipe penetrating a roof must be three feet above the roof line on the up slope side of the penetration. If the pipe is farther than 10 feet from the roof peak it must be 2. This is a bit of an odd measurement and chimney clearance case because the chimney side is actually about 8 away from the roof edge. They intend to make sure that the chimney draws properly and that a fire hazard does not occur.

The chimney must extend at least 3 above the highest point where it passes through a roof. The chimney opening above the roof of a sticks and bricks house should be 3 feet above the roof line or 2 feet above any part of the building within 10 whichever is higher. Building a firewood shed in general the overall height of the chimney from the base of the wood stove to the top of the chimney should not be less than 15 feet. Most wood stove and factory built fireplace manufacturers and local building codes will require that the chimney must extend at least 2 feet above any portion of any structure within 10 feet measured horizontally and must extend at least 3 feet above the highest point of its roof penetration.
