Finding the right balance is easy.

Pull on them to see if they are still attached to the sash weights in their pockets.

Try one or more of the following to keep windows and doors from sticking.

Replace or repair any parts that are broken or stuck.
Break the seal all around the window sashes.
When your window has stops grab them.
Reinstall the door panel using the reverse process to how you removed the panel.
Lubricate moving parts and window guides and clean the window glass.
If the panel is held in by a parting strip use the chisel to pry it from its groove.
Remove the access panel in the sash channel to get to the counterweight.
Go to the bottom of the other side of the window frame and do the same.
Look along the top inside of the window frame for stops.
Too tight and you ll find them difficult or impossible to open and close.
Clean the window track by vacuuming it with the brush attachment then using a toothbrush and hot soapy water to remove any remaining grime.
